This is a brief excerpt
of the sermon given by Pastor Alexander Thomas during the Watch
Night service on Friday, December 31st, 2010 at the
International Church Atlanta, Georgia.
This New Years message was taken from
Nehemiah 2: 17-20
wall of Jerusalem was broken down and the gates were burned with
fire. This was the condition even after the temple was finished.
As seen in the book of Ezra, the walls were being built
gradually, but like the building of the temple, the work was
long neglected. Upon hearing this news, Nehemiah seeks
permission from the Persian king to go to Jerusalem. Arriving in
Jerusalem, he mobilizes the people to begin rebuilding the wall.
Nehemiah's plan for rebuilding the wall involved the people
working together, each family group taking a certain section of
the wall and working on it. In other words it was a team work.
Once the work was started he faced with opposition, both from
without and from within. Nehemiah responded with prayer. Nehemiah stood firm
against the enemy until the project
is complete, and the city resettled.
can be accomplished when God is helping those who honor Him.
Nehemiah the kings cup bearer, heard the word from
And they said to me, "The survivors who are left from the
captivity in the province are there in great distress and
reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its
gates are burned with fire." Nehemiah 1:3 (NKJV)
rebuilding around the wall is important. Rebuilding the wall
around the city allows the people worship freely without being
attacked by the enemy.
Upon hearing the word from
Jerusalem what Nehemiah did?
So it was, when I heard these
words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I
was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said: "I
pray, Lord God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep
Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your
commandments Nehemiah 1:4-5 (NKJV)
criticize, Nehemiah wept, mourned and prayed with fasting
when our life is in mess, family is in a mess, struggling with
any thing, this is a good example to follow weeping before God
with fasting and prayer. Nehemiah agonized, confessed sin, and
quoted Scripture refering to Deuteronomy chapter 28, "Lord, you
promised that if we sinned, we could be scattered. But you also
promised that if we returned again to you, You would gather us
from wherever we've been."
Nehemiah placed his faith on
what God have spoken. He was a man of prayer always offering up
prayers unto God.
In order to receive anything from God
we need to trust His Word.
As the work started he faced
opposition from the enemy.
Satan always oppose the work
But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite
official, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed at us
and despised us, and said, "What is this thing that you are
doing? Will you rebel against the king?" Nehemiah 2:19-20 (NKJV)
Ridicule and mockery are tools that the enemy often uses to
discourage the work of God. The cause for fear is getting our
eyes upon the enemy and his threats. The cure is to keep our
eyes on the Lord.
What Nehemiah did in face of opposition?
answered them, and said to them, "The God of heaven Himself will
prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but
you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem."
Stability is needed when we dealing with problems.
building of the wall was completed in 52 days.
So the wall
was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Nehemiah 6:15 (NKJV) Success comes when we walk with Christ.
Just like a challenge before Nehemiah, we have a challenge
before us. As we relay totally on God He will give us success.
